Short-tube flow meters

SGK

SKM

Fields of use

  • chemical industry
  • water and waste water technology
  • small furnace systems
  • dosing systems

Application

Short-tube variable area flow meters are suitable for the measurement of small and low flow rates and are available in different types, e.g. with valve and limit switches.

Media

  • water
  • air
  • transparent fluids

Operating principle

The float can easiliy move up and down in the conical measuring tube. The vertical position of the float, obtained as a function of the flow velocity of the measuring media, is an indication of the flow rate. This flow rate can be read directly on the scale of the measuring tube.
With increasing volume flow, the annular gap surface area A around the collar of the float increases (A2 > A1).

The SKM is equipped with a spring loaded piston inside a cylindrical tube made of borosilicate glass. Together with the spring, the piston with an orifice bore forms the measuring system. When the fluid flows through the SKM, the piston will change its position. The position is proportional to the quantity flowing through the meter. A scale at the upper edge of the piston directly indicates the flow rate. The SKM can be installed into pipelines either horizontally or vertically.
